The Cuckoo Waltz

048

This is an annual multi-terrain run for children and adults, raising funds for local charities and organisations. The adult run is over a distance of about 7.5 miles up and down the cliffs and hills around St Agnes. The children's run is over about 1.5 miles. Application forms are available from the run organisers (see 'Contact Us').

The What?

Once regarded as remote, St Agnes was 'therefore' inhabited by simpletons! At least two stories of the simplicity of St Agnes folk are well known, the more common being that of Hedging in the Cuckoo.

The men of St Agnes noticed that when the cuckoo was uttering its curious call, summer time was nigh. If, decided the men, we can build a hedge around the cuckoo and keep him in, then shall we have summer all the year round. Although they built their hedge as fast as possible the bird took wing and flew away. "There now!" exclaimed the disappointed hedge builders, "if us had put on one taub more, us would have kep' en in!" Hence, people born in St Agnes are known as "Cuckoos".

The above story is reproduced courtesy of M. H. Bizley, and the St Agnes Museum.
